Do WhatsApp calls work in Dubai?
Travellers heading to Dubai often ask whether they can make WhatsApp voice and video calls. The answer depends less on the phone than on the internet connection it is using at that moment.
Local networks in the United Arab Emirates can block VoIP calls. That means the same phone may make a WhatsApp call on one connection and fail on another connection later that day.
WhatsApp calls on SefereSIM data
SefereSIM’s United Arab Emirates plans route data out to the internet through Europe. On the eSIM’s cellular data, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls normally work. This comes from the plan’s routing. It is not a promise that a particular app will work on a particular day.
You can see a plan’s internet exit in the "Exits via ..." information on the plan page. Checking that detail before travel makes it easier to understand how the connection works.
Why hotel and cafe Wi-Fi is different
There is an important distinction here. When you join hotel, cafe, or airport Wi-Fi, your phone is using a local connection. SefereSIM does not change where another business’s Wi-Fi reaches the internet. VoIP restrictions may still apply on local Wi-Fi.
If calls work on eSIM data but stop in a hotel lobby, check whether the phone joined Wi-Fi first. Trying the call on the eSIM’s cellular data separates a connection issue from a phone setting issue.
How to set up your phone for Dubai
Install the eSIM at home before you fly. Adding the QR code while your phone already has an internet connection is easier. Buying the plan or installing the eSIM does not start the service days. The days begin when the eSIM first connects to a network in the United Arab Emirates.
After landing, check these settings:
- Select the United Arab Emirates eSIM as your cellular data line.
- Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line. A travel eSIM connects to the network through roaming.
- If you want Data Roaming off on your home line, change that setting only for the home line.
- Make your first call test on cellular data before joining airport or hotel Wi-Fi.
Your WhatsApp number does not change
An eSIM does not give WhatsApp a new phone number. Your usual SIM can stay in the phone and your WhatsApp account can remain on its existing number. The eSIM carries the mobile data used by the app. The same setup is useful for SMS and banking codes sent to your usual number.
If your phone supports dual SIM, you can keep your usual line for calls and SMS while using the eSIM for data. The setting names vary on iPhone and Android, but cellular data needs to be set to the eSIM.
If the call does not work
First, check whether the phone is on Wi-Fi. Then turn on cellular data and confirm that the eSIM is the selected data line. If Data Roaming is off for the eSIM, the line may not connect to the internet. A newly arrived line may also need a moment to find a network.
After those checks, try the call again on cellular data. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls normally work on SefereSIM’s United Arab Emirates eSIM data. Local Wi-Fi is a separate connection, and the eSIM does not change it.
A few days in Dubai and a longer stay do not need the same amount of data. Maps, messaging and transport apps make lighter use, while video calls and video viewing raise daily consumption. Consider your trip length and your usage together.
